Working with Organic in Detroit, we fleshed out their concept of the world’s first Period Shop, taking over the design, implementation, and content creation for U by Kotex’s massive flagship project. The idea was to provide a safe and comfortable place for women to go during their period and to de-stigmatize what’s usually just referred to as “that time of the month.”
We assembled a team of designers, producers, and writers to create custom products and a slate of in-store experiences. Nearly 4 months in the making, we created 20 custom products, a newsprint zine, over 30 pieces of content, and special events including guest DJ’s, a comedy night, and custom nail art. Custom products included t-shirts, mugs, pajamas, pillows, pins, cell-phone cases, tea, chocolate, and ice cream. Collaborators included: Baggu, Aelfie, Print All Over Me, Bando, Compartes Chocolates, Jordan Sondler, Kirin Gandhi, Beau the Band, and Gemma Correll.
In it’s 3 day run, the store attracted more than 10,000 visitors. We raised nearly $10,000 for Susan’s Place and generated tons of press and social media traffic. The store was covered by industry sites like Creativity, AdWeek, PSFK, Fast Company, and AdAge and press like Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Refinery 29, InStyle, and Teen Vogue.
The general sentiment? Why hasn’t anyone done this before!
